Union Cave, Produced by Dave Socky July 7, 2001. 8:16 minutes
eleven cavers descended on Union Cave. It was a joint survey and videography trip. The video team included Dave Socky, Scott Grisso, Randy Michael, Doug Feller, Jeff Bray, Pam Tegelman, and Tom Malabad. The survey team included Frank Abbato, Marcus Priessner, Kristen Matak, and Brian Perkins.
Union Cave has been known for a long time and included only a measly 500 or so feet. In February 2001, Jeff Bray and a number of other Monroe County Cavers poked around in an old breakdown lead. To their surprise, it opened up right away and led to over two miles of additional passage. Some of it is beautiful large walking passage, but some is quite small. The best stuff is well guarded by unstable breakdown climbs, an awkward 30-foot cable ladder climb, and a ten-inch-wide vertical slot to squeeze through (you go down on the way in!).
But there is some beautiful cave also. A large room with a 30-foot waterfall spraying out from nicely fluted walls – An aquamarine rimstone pool with a large calcite raft floating on the deep water – And much, much more. Set to music, this video portrays some of the varied and beautiful passage in Union Cave.
